To our United Methodist Sisters and Brothers

Even on vacation, I have been watching the very disappointing vote yesterday regarding LGBTQ full-inclusion in the United Methodist Church closely. My disappointment in this vote is nothing compared to the ramifications this has for my many United Methodist friends and colleagues at this time. I worked in the UMC for a few years back in my 20s and was amazed by the incredible people I came to know and love (many of whom are still close and dear friends). I am especially grateful today for the several former United Methodists (including two former pastors) who are such a vital part at St. Stephen's.

Prayers for the repose of the soul of Tom Stickney

I ask the prayers of St. Stephens for the repose of the soul of Thomas Judson Stickey, a long-time member of St Stephen’s and dear friend to many of us, who died last evening (February 12, 2019) in St. George, Utah. He was 99 years old.

Also please keep his children and their entire family in your prayers at this time.

The service will be held at St. Stephen’s when “it’s much warmer up there” (according to daughter Sue). His ashes will join Ruth’s in the columbarium at Gethsemane Cathedral. I will share more information about the service when details are known.

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our prayers on behalf of your servant Tom, and grant him an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of your saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A bell for St. Stephen's!!!

St. Stephen’s is getting a bell!! This beautiful bell is being donated by Dinah Stephens in memory of her daughter, Jada, and should arrive from Michigan this summer. We are so excited to finally have this wonderful addition to our congregation. As some of you have heard me say, I have for several years hoped and wished for a bell for our congregation. And now it’s becoming a reality! Dinah says, “It has a deep ring” Thank you, Dinah! We are so grateful for this wonderful gift to our congregation!

Please don’t forget to bring your dried out palms from last year’s Palm Sunday to church in the next weeks. They will be burned after March 3 and the ashes will be used for Ash Wednesday on March 6.

In addition to it being the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany it is also the Feast Day of St. Scholastica. Here she is in her place of honor in the beautiful window dedicated to her and her brother St. Benedict at St. Stephen 's.

The weather outside is frightful but inside Smoky St. Stephen's it's warm and cozy. This is the last Wednesday night Mass before Ash Wednesday.
