Fun Fact: All Souls Day is also known liturgically as The Commemoration of All Faithfully Departed.

This day reminds us of our belief that all Christians that ever lived, are living, and will ever be, are bound together in one Communion – the Body of Christ.

What should we do on All Souls Day? It's a day for being with family, visiting cemeteries, sharing memories of loved ones, and honoring traditions.

Much like Halloween in other countries, All Souls Day is marked by the consumption of impressive quantities of sugar – particularly in the form of frutta martorana, beautiful marzipan sweets in the shape of fresh fruits and vegetables, and ossa dei morti, almond biscuits.

St. Stephen's at Diocesan Convention 2022

St. Stephen's was well represented at Diocesan Convention at the Ramada in Fargo. Katie Ilze and Kristofer Sando served as Acolytes and Deacon John Peter Anderson served as a Deacon at the Diocesan Eucharist with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. And we had a full delegation.

Amy Phillips speaks on her resolution for Creation Care as Stephanie Garcia looks on.

We had a great Annual Diocesan Convention October 21-22 at the Ramada in Fargo. A highlight was seeing and listening to the wonderful preaching of our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry.

St. Stephen’s has an important role in the diocese and played a large part in the success of the weekend.

Sandy Holbrook invested a great deal of time helping to plan the convention. She and other members were integral in the services and cleanup.

St. Stephen’s members contributing to the success of the convention included Katie and Kristofer Sando as acolytes, John Anderson as deacon, and Steve Buldoc setting and clearing the altar.

Fr. Jamie Parsley was on the nomination committee.

The preconvention workshops included one on Creation Care led by Amy Philips and Trevor Johnson. As Chancellor, Leo Wilking, sat at the head table advising the bishop and convention on parliamentary matters.

All four resolutions, which passed with a large majority, came from and were presented by St. Stephen’s.

On behalf of the Canons Committee, Leo Wilking presented Resolution # 1 - a change in the canons to set the Annual Convention at least 18 months in advance.

John Baird presented two resolutions put forward by the vestry of St. Stephens.

Resolution # 2 on gun violence - that this Convention deplores the increase in gun violence across the United States, including mass shootings in schools, churches, grocery stores and shopping malls, and urges our state and Federal officeholders to take further action to limit or eliminate the availability of guns and high-capacity magazines – especially weapons of war such as the AR-15 rifle — to those

persons unfit to purchase them.

Resolution # 3 vestry was on reproductive rights - that this Convention deplores the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and affirms that reproductive rights are human rights and that the decision to have an abortion is a decision that should be left to the woman and her physician, with limited restrictions. Both were forwarded to the Episcopal Church Office

of Government Relations and to the Governor of North Dakota and Members of Congress from North Dakota. The reproductive rights resolution was also sent to all members of the state legislature.

Amy Philips put forth a resolution from Creation Care – Resolution # 4 that encourages the Diocesan Council and all Diocesan parishes to learn more about the scientific realities, pressing moral implications, and needs (especially in parish areas) related to climate change; encourages the Diocesan Council and Diocesan parishes to advocate for local and state policies and solutions to climate change

and its consequences, utilizing and adapting resources from the Episcopal Church (and from other local, state, and national sources) related to creation care, environmental advocacy, and environmental justice; and encourages local parishes to incorporate local nature, environmental justice, and advocacy for creation care into all aspects of community life and Christian education and worship.

We have four members on the Diocesan Council. John Baird was elected to Standing Committee, as well as elected as a deputy to General Convention in Kentucky to be held in 2024.

Deacon John Anderson was reelected from the East region to Council.

Stephanie Garcia continues as a regional representative on Council and Leo Wilking, as Chancelor is a member.

Our Convention delegates were Fr. Jamie Parsley, Deacon John Anderson, John Baird, Annette Morrow, Leroy Chief, Janice Chief, Steve Bolduc, Sandy Holbrook, Andrea Olson, Jessica Anderson, Gin Templeton, Amy Philips, and Leo Wilking.

Obituary for Holly Holden-Eklund

On Thursday, September 8th, 2022, Holly Anne Holden-Eklund passed away at the age of sixty-eight in her home in Moorhead, Minnesota, after many years of declining health.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Eklund, son Benjamin Holden, brother Bruce Holden, grandsons Benjamin Holden Jr., and Dre Bang; nieces Katie (Simon) Gustavsson, Jacqui (Mike) Fitzpatrick, and Briana Eklund; nephews Darrian and Aidan Eklund, two very dear cats Ragtime and Nutmeg, and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Heather Holden.
Holly was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Walter “Bud” and Louise (Kennedy) Holden on January 19th, 1954, their first child. A precocious tomboy and budding artist, she had a predilection for exploring and a determination to make her own way in an era that valued conformity. Early adventures included deep ventures into the reservoir woodlands of West Boyleston and car racing as an under-aged driver, something her parents never found out.

Early in life, she found herself tied to an unworthy partner, which relationship ended traumatically and led to starting over again with a four-year-old son in tow. Life as a single mother in the seventies was a hard struggle, but it was perhaps that of which she was most proud of. It was while doing so that she finished her education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Worcester University (at that time College) and moving on to the great disappointment of being a handful of credits shy of her Master’s degree when the program she was enrolled in was canceled. During these years, she found great satisfaction working for the school serving foreign exchange students, in community theater, for a time running her own store, Holly’s Place, serving a low-income neighborhood, and running a group home for disabled residents.

Throughout her life, she pursued an interest in art and poetry, competing in the New England slam poetry scene in the ‘90s as a mehndi body artist for several years at the turn of the millennium and, very briefly, began as a tattoo apprentice. She enjoyed photography and illustration.

In 1997, Holly met her life partner and husband, Michael Eklund, through a chat service known as a talker. Less than five months after that meeting, she packed up everything she owned and her two yowling cats for the breakneck two-day journey to Fargo, North Dakota.

It took several years before she established herself professionally in the social services community, first as a refugee resettlement case worker and ultimately her longest position as a job search counselor and workshop instructor. She found great satisfaction in enabling the people of our community to discover the work skills and talents they didn’t know they had and transform them into better work and better lives.

Health complications set in in her final years, but she was blessed with the gift of more time from an anonymous kidney donor, for which she was very grateful. She made use of that time enjoying grandsons, cats, and home.

Her memorial service will be held at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church at 120 21st Ave. N, Fargo, North Dakota, on October 31st at 2:00 P.M. She will be interred two days later at the memorial garden there as part of the evening All Soul’s service which begins at 6:00 P.M.
