Words of Wisdom:

“Being a Christian is not essentially about joining a church or being a nice person, but about following in the footsteps of Jesus, taking his teachings seriously, letting his Spirit take the lead in our lives, and in so doing helping to change the world from our nightmare into God’s dream.” ― Michael Curry, Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus

The Feast of St. Hildegard

Today is the Feast of St. Hildegard of Bingen, one of the first feminists and truly one the most appropriate saints to name our bell after. We all love our very own Hildegard of Ringin'...

Prayers for the repose of the soul of Holly Holden-Eklund

It is with great sadness that I ask the prayers of St. Stephen’s for the repose of the soul of Holly Holden-Eklund, who died this evening (September 8) in her home.

I went over soon afterward and prayed the Prayers at the Time of Death and anointed her.

Holly was a faithful member of St. Stephen’s and a very dear friend to many of us. Her loss is difficult one for all of us who knew and loved her.

Please keep Michael in your prayers at this time, as well as their grandchildren and their entire family.

A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen’s later next month. Her ashes will be buried in the St. Stephen’s Memorial Garden.

Almighty God, our Father in heaven, before whom live all who die in the Lord: Receive our loved one Holly into the courts of your heavenly dwelling place. Let her heart and soul now ring out in joy to you, O Lord, the living God, and the God of those who live. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

-peace,

New Baptism Windows installed at St. Stephen's

A busy morning at Smoky St. Stephen's as our latest stained glass windows were installed above the Narthex doors. Designed by our very own Gin Templeton and installed by the Michael Orchard Studio in Fargo, the so-called Baptism Window (because it overlooks our baptistery) was given in loving memory of parishioner Leon Gelinske , nicknamed "Rooster" (hence the rooster in the lower corner) by his family and friends. Like the other Mondrian-inspired windows Gin designed for our midcentury church, this one is also a votive window in gratitude for our parish's resilience during the Covid pandemic (see the little Covid symbol also). It is a truly stunning addition to our building. And just in time for it to be blessed and dedicated for our Dedication Sunday on September 11.

Words of Wisdom:

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Gandhi

Every day we see the violence around us. While there is very little that we can do, the Indian political leader says it best. Start with the man in the mirror. Be the change you want to see within others. While you can’t influence the world, you can be a better human, and become the testament of the change.
